Stephen Hazell

Consultant

Stephen Hazell is a consultant with Nature Canada and a retired lawyer.

Stephen has worked with Nature Canada in several capacities since 2012, most recently as director of policy and general counsel. He was executive director of Sierra Club Canada (2006 – 2009) and of Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (2000 – 2003). He served as director of legislative and regulatory affairs at the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency that developed the regulations for the implementation of the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act. He has also served as adjunct professor at the University of Ottawa Faculty of Law

Stephen holds a Master of Science degree in Plant Ecology from the University of Toronto and a law degree from Queen’s University. He has written numerous scholarly articles, as well as Canada v. The Environment, his 1999 book on federal environmental assessment law and policy.
