Working Toward Nature-Based Climate Solutions

Nature-based climate solutions present a unique opportunity for Canada to make significant progress in tackling both mass extinction and climate change.

The world is facing twin environmental crises: mass extinction and climate change. Although these crises are unique challenges, Natured-Based Climate Solutions (NBCS) could help address both.

NBCS are actions that work with and enhance nature to help address climate change, biodiversity loss, and environmental degradation. Efforts include conservation, protection, restoration and improved land management actions that increase carbon storage or avoid greenhouse gas emissions in landscapes. NBCS helps build a more resilient society by fostering ecosystem health and mitigating the impacts of climate change.

About the Campaign

Prime Minister Trudeau has made meaningful commitments to invest in Nature-Based Climate Solutions as an increasingly popular opportunity to reduce emissions. These commitments provide opportunities for the nature community to get involved and help to fight both of these crises. Commitments include:

  • Investing $3 billion over 10 years to cover the costs of planting two billion net additional trees, initiate regional and urban forest plans, and put in place measures to sequester carbon and build more resilient ecosystems
  • Reduce emissions by an estimated 30Mt by 2030 through nature-based climate solutions initiatives
  • Develop federal carbon offset protocols
  • Expand protected areas to 25 percent of Canada’s land, water and ocean by 2025, and 30 percent by 2030
  • Establish and/or scale-up complementary programs at Infrastructure Canada and Agriculture Canada
  • Provide support for Indigenous-led conservation
