Investing in our Futures on Earth Day

With Earth Day just around the corner, we wanted to share about investing in the future, which is the theme of Earth Day this year. It reminds us that governments, businesses and citizens are essential to take action together to halt and reverse species loss and climate change. Together we can protect our Boreal Forest, Great Lakes and Grasslands and all the many iconic animals that call those spaces home.

Today at Nature Canada, we are celebrating our partner Scotiabank and their investment in the future. They are inspiring their customers to switch from paper statements to electronic statements and in doing so, providing funds to Nature Canada to defend nature. Every small step can have a large impact. Together we are calling for:

  • the protection of 30% of our lands and waters by 2030;
  • including protecting intact forests and more Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas;
  • new urban parks with an emphasis on ensuring access to nature for racialized communities; and
  • municipalities to adapt more bird- and wildlife friendly practices.

We had some big wins these past few months like the announcement of the newest Marine Protected Area called Tang.ɢwan-ḥačxʷiqak-Tsig̱is, which will protect the deep seas off the coast of British Columbia and many marine animals (read about our whirlwind year here), but we can’t rest on that, there is still much to do to protect our planet.

Nature Canada achieves impact thanks to our many donors, supporters, and nature partners who are taking up our call to action, and volunteering their efforts through petitions, outreach and on-the-ground conservation work in the towns and cities all across Canada.

In particular, we are also thankful to the employees of Scotiabank who have offered to volunteer their time and efforts with our Bird teams and in our mentorship program for young conservationists! (The youth of today inherit this call to action to follow in our footsteps and ensure meaningful change.)

There is much to celebrate this Earth Day and to be hopeful about as we see people stepping up to defend and restore nature. Nature Canada does not work alone and is thankful to everyone for their support.
