Earth Day 2023: Invest in Our Planet

On April 22, 1970, environmental advocates from around the world gathered to celebrate the very first Earth Day. Over 50+ years later we are proud to join nature-lovers from around the world to celebrate and also bring attention to the nature issues that will affect Canadians today and for generations to come.

Since the very beginning, Nature Canada has been at the forefront of the environmental movement in Canada. For nearly 85 years, we have helped protect over 110 million acres of parks and wildlife areas in Canada and the countless species that depend on this habitat. Nature Canada now represents a movement of over 130,000 members and supporters, and more than 1,200 nature organizations.

In the last year alone, we have made a tremendous impact:

A roadmap for ocean protection was announced, including the new Tang.ɢwan-ḥačxʷiqak-Tsig̱is Marine Protected Area to protect the “Deep Sea Oasis” off Vancouver Island.

There was a massive movement around NatureCOP in Montreal, proving to the Prime Minister that Canadians expect leadership and leading to a new Global Biodiversity Framework.

Polluting industries like clearcut logging were called out, which mask their carbon emissions and make false claims about sustainable forestry.

Hundreds of species were protected, including the Boreal Woodland Caribou, the Red Knot of Eeyou Istchee in James Bay, and Atlantic Salmon threatened by genetic pollution.

And there’s still so much work to be done…

If Canada hopes to reach its nature protection target of 30 percent of lands and oceans by 2030, we must act now and fight for crucial habitats. We can do that by:

  • Restoring and better protecting wetlands, grasslands, eelgrass and boreal forests that are so essential to counter climate impacts
  • Community-based climate action including: tree-planting, rewilding, and ecosystem restoration
  • Working with hundreds of local groups to establish nature-based climate action initiatives and providing toolkits for better protection for urban green spaces
  • Supporting Indigenous-led conservation
  • Asking nature-lovers like you to speak up as we call on decision-makers to do what’s right by Defending and Restoring nature

This Earth Day you can help by joining the movement of Canadians raising their voices for nature.

Sign up to find out how you can be a voice for nature, this Earth Day and everyday.
