Nature Canada

On World Environment Day, Thank You

Today, on World Environment Day, I want to say thanks.

Thanks to the help of so many people in Canada, and friends from beyond our borders, Black Out Speak Out has reached more folks than we ever thought possible. Nearly 600 partner groups — from within the naturalist community and well beyond — helped us spread the message about the threats to nature and democracy in Canada.

With your support, #blackoutspeakout was a top trending topic on Twitter yesterday, almost 10,000 people joined the campaign on Facebook, and countless others changed their profile pictures and got the word out to their friends.
Our campaign Web site got over 170,000 hits, and 36,000 emails were sent to members of parliament opposing bill C-38. And, check out all the media coverage we got!
Of course, as long as our environmental laws and our voices are under threat, our fight is not over. Revisions will be proposed to the Species at Risk Act this fall that threaten our land, air, and climate. And, changes to charities law could inhibit our ability to speak out to protect our natural world.

Over the course of the summer we will continue to get the message out that Canada’s environmental laws need strengthening, not weakening — especially with more than $500 billion expected to be invested in resource projects over the next decade, according to reports.

We will continue to keep you informed, and we’ll need you to speak out again.
Our work has only begun. Please consider making a donation so we may continue to apply the pressure needed to protect our environment and democracy.
