Budget 2023: Nature Canada welcomes almost $2.5 billion in new funding to advance Canada’s commitment to halt and reverse nature loss by 2030

Unceded Algonquin Territory — Ottawa, ON — March 29, 2023 – Budget 2023, along with historic levels of funding for nature since 2015, form a solid basis for the delivery of a comprehensive action plan to halt and reverse nature loss this year.

Budget 2023 includes significant investments to better protect and restore nature, including $800 million for Indigenous-led conservation, $650 million to clean up the lakes and rivers, $150 million to protect whales, and $185 million to protect species at risk. However, this investment still falls far short of what our partners in the Green Budget Coalition have called for Budget 2023.

Also missing from Budget 2023 are resources to implement Canada’s important commitment to identify and redirect industrial subsidies that cause harm to nature. To the contrary, the budget adds almost $10 billion in subsidies for mining and forestry activities which have the potential to cause significant harm to species and ecosystems.

Nature Canada looks to the Government to make progress this year on its repeated international commitment to make sure every dollar it spends is aligned with its nature and climate goals.
