Petition Update: Protecting BC’s underwater mountains

Thank you to everyone who sent a letter to protect the Deepsea Oasis!

In just under a month we’ve had 5332 Canadians join the campaign to protect the Deepsea Oasis.

Thousands of us have signed the petition asking Minister Wilkinson to create a new Marine Protected Area off the coast of British Columbia that would protect life-giving underwater mountains and volcanic vents.

Those Nature Canada supporters are being echoed by other letter writers from CPAWS BC and the David Suzuki Foundation. The campaign goals are also being supported by ocean scientists and leaders from the Nuu-chah-nulth and Haida nations.

Together, we’re on our way to repeating the success of our campaign to protect the Laurentian Channel. Canada has pledged to protect 10 per cent of marine areas by 2020, but we’re only currently at 8.27 per cent.

“To secure more protection for nature we need to show the federal government that Canadians care. Thank you to everyone who has joined our campaign to protect this incredible underwater seascape,” said Gauri Sreenivasan, Campaign Director for Nature Canada.

“We look forward to keeping supporters updated as the campaign continues,” she said.
