Reaction: Nature Canada Applauds Release of National Biodiversity Strategy and Proposed Nature Accountability Act

Environment and Climate Change Canada formally released “Canada’s 2030 Biodiversity Strategy” today — the key promise from Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault out of the UN Biodiversity COP (COP15) in Montreal in 2022.

“In the face of mass extinction — the greatest since the dinosaurs — Canada played a pivotal role in garnering a strong Global Biodiversity Framework at COP15 in Montreal. Now Minister Guilbeault fulfills his key promise with the 2030 Biodiversity Strategy. We thank him on behalf of nature lovers across Canada and will be carefully reviewing the strategy’s commitment to reconciliation, accountability, and Canadians’ long-abiding love of nature.”

Environment and Climate Change Canada formally released “Canada’s 2030 Biodiversity Strategy” today. The release of the Biodiversity Strategy was the key promise from Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault out of the UN Biodiversity COP (COP15) in Montreal in 2022.

Nature Canada with a broad coalition of environmental organizations have provided input into the strategy and have eagerly anticipated its release. Among other recommendations, Nature Canada has been calling on Guilbeault to ensure that the 2030 Biodiversity Strategy is equitable, accountable, and fully funded.

At the same time, Minister Guilbeault tabled the Nature Accountability Act in the House Commons. Early indications are that the Accountability Act lacks key elements but Nature Canada and partners will be looking for cross-party support to amend and approve the act to ensure the best outcomes for nature.
