New Cabinet Lineup Sends Strong Signal That Nature and Climate Are Top Priorities

Statement by Nature Canada’s Gauri Sreenivasan, Director of Policy and Campaigns

Unceded Algonquin Territory, Ottawa ON — October 26, 2021

“Tackling the dual crises of climate change and nature loss requires strong environmental champions around the Cabinet table,” said Gauri Sreenivasan, Director of Policy and Campaigns at Nature Canada. “We welcome the Prime Minister’s appointments of climate and nature leaders to key Cabinet posts.”

“Bringing long-time environmental advocate, Minister Stephen Guilbeault onto the environment file signals that nature and climate action are being taken seriously. Minister Wilkinson’s appointment to Natural Resources Canada is a recognition that the management of natural assets is an environmental and economic question and that climate action will be a priority in this portfolio.”

“We further welcome Joyce Murray, in her new appointment as the Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard. Protecting ocean ecosystems is a key priority for addressing nature’s decline and climate change together.”

“With these key appointments we see an all-of-government response to climate and nature taking hold. Nature Canada looks forward to engaging with the new Cabinet and the rest of parliament to achieve our shared nature and climate goals. With our members, supporters, and partners we can put Canada on course to create a nature-positive, carbon neutral and equitable world for all.”
