Nature Canada Statement on Passing of Bill S-222 to Encourage Sustainable Material Use

Unceded Algonquin Territory – Ottawa, ON – Oct. 4, 2023

“Nature Canada welcomes the passing of Bill S-222 into law on September 28 and applauds MP Richard Cannings for championing it.

Given the threat of climate change and biodiversity loss, it is critical that the federal government reduce the environmental impacts of building materials it uses.

The effectiveness of this law in cutting emissions will depend on an accurate assessment of the carbon footprint of different materials.

We, therefore, urge the federal government to heed calls from its own Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development, and start transparently reporting emissions attributable to logging in Canada in order to ensure that emissions associated with wood products are counted correctly.”
