Victory for Environmental Justice

Passage of the National Strategy on Environmental Racism and Environmental Justice Act a hugely important step.

Unceded Algonquin Territory — Ottawa, ON | June 20, 2024

On behalf of Nature Canada, we extend our heartfelt congratulations on the Senate’s passage of Bill C-226, the National Strategy on Environmental Racism and Environmental Justice Act. This landmark legislation is a significant victory for environmental justice, marking a critical step towards addressing the systemic inequities that disproportionately impact marginalized communities and Indigenous peoples across Canada.

The passage of this bill is a testament to the tireless efforts of advocates, including Dr. Ingrid Waldron and the Canadian Coalition for Environmental and Climate Justice (CCECJ), who have long championed the cause of environmental justice. Their dedication has brought to light the urgent need for comprehensive data collection and analysis to fully understand and address the pervasive issue of environmental racism.

We commend the federal government for recognizing the profound links between racialization, socio-economic status, and environmental risk. The development of Canada’s first national strategy on environmental racism and environmental justice, as mandated by this act, is a crucial step towards ensuring that all Canadians, regardless of their background, can enjoy a safe and healthy environment.

Nature Canada looks forward to the swift and effective implementation of this strategy, emphasizing the importance of community engagement and the inclusion of those most affected by environmental injustices. We join advocates in urging the federal government to allocate the necessary resources to advance these vital initiatives, ensuring lasting and meaningful change.

Together, we celebrate this milestone and remain committed to supporting the ongoing efforts to achieve environmental justice for all.
