Nature Is Top of Heart: A Clearer Mandate Than Ever Post-Election

Canadians Show Overwhelming Support for Nature Protection, Calling for Action

Unceded Algonquin Territory, Ottawa, ON — May 2, 2025

As the dust settles from the recent federal election, one story is rising above the noise. There is a deep, unshakeable connection Canadians feel to the natural world. Amid threats to our sovereignty, and even to our values, there is a connection to nature that has been with us since the beginning and continues to shape who we are as a nation.

A recent nationwide poll conducted by Ekos found that 89% of Canadians see nature as a key part of our national identity. It is not merely scenery or a backdrop to our lives, but a defining element of our shared experience – more fundamental, even, than hockey, healthcare, or the Canadian flag.

“Nature is more than a symbol of Canada’s beauty. It is woven into the fabric of what it means to be Canadian,” said Emily McMillan, Executive Director of Nature Canada. “This is a sentiment that transcends regions, backgrounds, and political divides. Canadians across the country recognize the importance of preserving our natural heritage.”

The same survey also revealed a strong demand for action to protect nature, including:

  • 65% of Canadians support increased federal funding for nature conservation
  • 65% believe companies that harm the environment should not receive government subsidies
  • 64% are concerned about foreign control over Canada’s freshwater resources

“These results underscore that Canadians don’t just want nature protected in principle. They want real action,” McMillan added. “During the election, it was encouraging to see political leaders from all sides of the spectrum begin to prioritize nature protection in their platforms. Now the new government needs to heed this call to action.”

While issues such as housing and inflation dominated election debates, it is clear that nature remains a priority for Canadians. The newly elected Liberal government has pledged action to protect biodiversity and safeguard freshwater resources, as has the NDP and Bloc. The question is whether they will prioritize this work – but clearly Canadians see nature as vital.

“Nature isn’t a luxury or an afterthought. It is the heart of our national identity,” McMillan said. “Now, with overwhelming public support, it is time to act on the nature mandate Canadians have given the new government.”

As the country looks ahead, the importance of protecting Canada’s natural world remains more vital than ever with increasing climate instability and loss of biodiversity. However, it is clear that for Canadians, it’s not just about preserving the land we love — it’s about ensuring that the essence of Canada, which binds us together, endures for generations to come.
