Think Nationally, Act Locally!

You support national advocacy and amazing local conservation efforts.

Together with the voices, letters, petitions and actions of thousands of members like you, Nature Canada pushed for an action plan to halt and reverse biodiversity loss — and it’s working!

Nature Canada provided input into the Strategy, released in June by the federal government, and it is a solid framework and a good roadmap for meeting Canada’s conservation targets and commitments. A crucial component is the Nature Accountability Act, which places biodiversity as a key variable for decision-makers to consider in all of their actions. Your gifts to Nature Canada helped make this important milestone possible — thank you!

One of the 23 targets included in the Strategy is about Protected Areas—Canada’s promise to protect 30% of land and water by 2030. This means doubling our protected areas in just 6 years. Now is the time for advocacy, and not just at the national level. Work to advance local conservation opportunities will also be crucial to meet this target.

Your support strengthens our national voice for nature here in Ottawa. Nature Canada has a long and distinguished history — 85 years of collaboration and partnerships that lead to more protections for habitat and wildlife. Our work in the nation’s capital is critical, and while we work to advocate for nature and secure more funding and commitments for national parks, marine conservation areas and other ways to protect vast and expansive Canadian wilderness, your gifts also support on-the-ground, local initiatives that make an impact right in your own Naturehood!

MAPPING YOUR SUPPORT IN ACTION

Local actions that YOU make possible!

This map shows you how your support of Nature Canada has direct and tangible impact on-the-ground in your NatureHood and across Canada!

Bird-Friendly Cities
Your gifts help local Bird Teams work to have their communities designated as Bird-Friendly Cities, which demonstrates a commitment to conserving important bird habitats, reducing and mitigating key threats to birds and educating the public about how to take action to save bird lives.

Future Bird Cities
Right now local Bird Teams are also working to have their communities join the flock!

NatureHood
Your gifts fund projects including Monarch Butterfly BioBlitzes, Nature for Newcomers, planting pollinator gardens, creating mini-forests and more. In the last 12 months, 49,000 Canadians engaged in local NatureHood activities!

Indigenous Communities
Your gifts fund Nature Canada’s crucial work on projects led by the Cree Nation Government like analyzing the impact of the 2023 wildfires in Eeyou Istchee and surveys to identify important areas for birds along their coastal territory. You also support aerial insectivore assessments, atlassing, community engagement and restoration and recovery projects led by the Six Nations of the Grand River.

Municipal Actions
Your gifts mobilize local nature lovers to advocate for protection of sites that can contribute to the 30×30 targets. This includes important work on tree equity and reforestation to increase tree canopy coverage in underserved areas.

“Canada has some of the most beautiful natural landscapes in the world, and we need to preserve as much as possible, especially in the face of climate change emergencies, but also for future generations.”
