Nature Alberta’s Nature Kids Summer Events

Nature Alberta’s Family Nature Nights connect Albertans with the wonders of their natural heritage.

Every July and August, Nature Alberta brings the wonders of the natural world to people across the province with our Family Nature Night events. From Edmonton to Calgary and beyond, this series connects Albertans with the creatures, places, and people that make the natural world of this province so fascinating.

About Us

Nature Alberta is a province-wide organization founded in 1970 by members of six natural history clubs across Alberta. Today we support a network of over 40 clubs, publish our seasonal Nature Alberta Magazine, speak up about conservation issues in defence of wildlife and wilderness, and help Albertans to become more connected with nature. Through our Nature Kids program we create activities, guides, and live events, providing opportunities for families to spend time outdoors together and to learn and care more about nature. And we strive for a future where kids that care about nature grow up to defend it, and our Family Nature Night events are a big part of making that happen.

Nature Alberta’s Nature Kids Program seeks to remove barriers to exploring and enjoying nature.

An Evening Out at Family Nature Nights

Family Nature Nights connect Albertans with people and places that enable them to learn and understand more about the natural heritage of this province. From the open plains of Calgary to the peaceful parklands of Red Deer, from the wild foothills of Edson to  the majestic river valley of Edmonton, we create memorable and engaging experiences that families can enjoy together. We endeavour to remove barriers so that anyone can participate by ensuring that these events are accessible and free. Thanks to this we’re better able to engage with underserved audiences such as newcomers to Canada, vulnerable youth, and other such marginalized communities.

The summer of 2025 featured hands-on activities and guided nature walks in federal migratory bird sanctuaries, aligning with Nature Canada’s initiative to introduce Canadians to these locations and highlight their ecological importance. Other activities this past summer included handling live fish and prehistoric fossils, finding out what’s inside owl pellets, contributing to urban naturalization through tree planting, and much more.

What Else You Can Do

Even though our Family Nature Nights run only in the summer, our Nature Kids program offers other events as well, from counting birds and bugs in the winter to outreach and activity booths at community events year-round. Through our NatureHood partnership we have developed a long list of DIY activities, guides, and other resources anyone can do at home, many of which have also been translated into French! Go to https://naturealberta.ca/nature-kids/ to learn more about these options.

To help us ensure that nature will continue to have advocates for protection, both in Alberta and across the country, check out the campaigns and blog posts at https://naturecanada.ca/ and become more informed of and involved in conservation actions throughout Canada.

Good Memories and a Better Future

It’s our goal to inspire and empower new generations of Albertans to become active champions for nature conservation. We believe there’s no better path to this than by getting families outdoors to learn about, connect with, and care about nature. What we care about, we protect, and we hope that both the memories made at Family Nature Nights and the desire to protect nature will last a lifetime.
