Nature Canada

Meet Kimberly: “The Best Part of Giving is Knowing It Will Help Nature Now, and in the Future”

Nature thrived on this planet long before humans arrived. Our presence has changed the earth and nature in every conceivable way – most of which we don't see, nor do we realize.

Nature is part of the Canadian identity; it’s part of our culture, and it’s a place where economic status, the colour of our skin, and our age don’t matter. Nature is a neutral entity.

When we lose nature, we lose the protection humanity needs. Our Nature Now donation helps protect what is important to us today, as well as our future generations. Giving is a way for us to act on our values and demonstrate what is fundamentally important to us and to those around us. We believe in a planet for everyone.

Paul and Kimberly

I’ve loved nature—especially birds—ever since I can remember. I’m proud to call myself a “bird brain.” Hearing a loon’s call across the lake gave me shivers the first time, and it still does today. Here in the Okanagan, where we live, nature is at our doorstep. In a small marsh across the street from our suburban home in Kelowna, you can find beavers, turtles, Great Blue Herons, several species of ducks, Red Wing Blackbirds, California Quail, and the list goes on. This little oasis brings joy and peace to everyone in our neighbourhood. We believe in the rights of nature and all the species that inhabit it.

As a “bird brain,” it’s important to me that Nature Canada’s Bird Friendly Cities campaign educates people about the impact cats have on birds, and that keeping cats indoors prevents birds from dying needlessly.

Another significant cause of bird death is birds hitting windows, often due to them seeing a reflection of the sky or trees in the glass, which makes the window appear as an open, safe space to fly through. You can help prevent these collisions by creating a visual barrier on the outside of the window using screens, netting, tape, decals, or paint spaced closely together to break up the reflection.

We know and understand that Nature Canada has costs associated with its work and fundraising efforts. Non-profit organizations require exceptional, passionate, and dedicated individuals to deliver high-quality work, manage finances effectively, and invest in growth.

When we have wins in nature, it gives us hope. If we don’t have nature, we don’t have people, because the more nature thrives, the more people thrive.

Everyone’s support is vital in protecting the natural world we all depend on. Nature Canada has protected over 144 million acres for biodiversity and climate values. This land preservation has helped to restore critical habitats, protect endangered species, and plant native trees.

Yet, our planet still faces urgent challenges. With a gift today, we can safeguard more wild spaces, preserve biodiversity, and ensure future generations inherit a thriving, healthy environment. Every contribution—no matter the size—helps us protect nature when it needs us most.

It takes a village, a town, and a city to educate people. Change starts with education, and that’s why we give. When I think about the impact of our Nature Now gift, the best part is knowing that it makes a positive difference in nature somewhere.

If you value nature, please give. In our experience, giving is so much more rewarding than receiving.

Thank you, Kimberly and Paul, for sharing your story. Perhaps, you’ve also been taking stock of your life. What do I stand for, what’s important to me? I’m here to help…If you’d like to know more about our Nature Now Fund, directing urgent gifts to critical projects now, please contact me at
