Bird Team Spotlight: Guelph, Ontario

Founded by University of Guelph PhD student, Hayley Wilson, Bird Safe Guelph members are turning their passion into action to help make Guelph one of Canada’s next Bird Friendly Cities

Hayley first started Bird Safe Guelph in an effort to raise awareness and educate her community on local bird threats and conservation. The Guelph Bird Team is made up of dedicated volunteers, students, staff and faculty from the University of Guelph who have backgrounds in psychology, integrative biology and ecology.

To date, Bird Safe Guelph has secured funding from Feather Friendly®, FLAP, and The University of Guelph Sustainability Office to provide over 200 local households with complimentary bird-friendly window coverings in an effort to reduce the amount of bird and window collisions in the city. The Guelph Bird Team has been a leader in community outreach. They are currently working on installing similar window coverings on The University of Guelph campus itself, as well as advocating for changes to the campus’s current building design plan to ensure safety for future campus birds to come. Check out some of their beautiful window covering designs below! Bird-friendly window retrofitting can be creative, simple, and effective all at the same time.
