Shorebirds rely on threatened coastal habitats throughout the Americas during their migrations. Help us connect communities and protect and restore habitats through education, capacity-building and knowledge exchange.

About the Campaign

There are 42% fewer shorebirds since 1980. These long- distance migrants depend upon a network of stopover sites along their migration routes for resting and refueling. Human activities such as pollution, industrial agriculture, ports, oil spill, loss of habitat from development and human-associated disturbance degrade and diminish the value of these areas for the migration superstars. When the pantry is empty they cannot refuel or arrive healthy at their destinations.

By engaging teachers and students through the Discover Shorebirds curriculum, we can reach the rest of the community. Our goal is to build local capacity for conservation through education, provision of resources and knowledge exchanges. Connecting knowledge holders with the classrooms grounds the learning in the local culture. Connecting students and teachers between Canada and Brazil who share the very same birds, broadens their perspectives and serves as an inspiration.

How We're Helping

To help raise awareness and support local action for shorebird recovery efforts, Nature Canada has partnered with bird conservation groups across the Americas to connect communities along the birds’ migratory routes, or “flyways”. Some of the biggest allies to realize this work are schools, teachers and their students.
