Moose are the only remaining native cervid (deer) found in the Maritimes, after Caribou were extirpated in the late 1800s. Key factors in the population decline of the Mainland Moose in Nova Scotia include brainworm, hunting, and habitat destruction resulting from clearcutting forestry practices. Today less than 1% of old growth forests in Nova Scotia remain, which are critical habitats for Moose as they raise their young. Check out this lesson plan for students in Grades 7-9 to learn more!
