World Environment Day
[separator headline=”h3″ title=”Seven Billion Dreams. One Planet”]
The theme of this year’s World Environment Day on June 5th is “Seven Billion Dreams. One Planet“. It’s a wonderful theme because it speaks to the very heart of our lives – our dreams and aspirations.
Whatever our individual dreams are (mine include working at Nature Canada – a dream come true! – and one day to bike across Canada) a healthy natural world is essential to make them reality. Clean water and air, healthy food, and diverse species and habitats; without these fundamentals that we sometimes take for granted we wouldn’t be able to dream beyond our day-to-day existence.
Nature Canada works constantly to protect nature – for nature itself but also for the well-being and the dreams of future generations. For example, we are standing up for the Species at Risk Act in Alberta, we are intervening as a voice for nature in National Energy Board hearings on pipelines, and recently, we successfully defended a crucial habitat of the endangered Blanding’s turtle from development. We are not against development – Nature Canada supports sustainable economic development, but at Nature Canada we know that there is one planet and we need to protect nature – all our dreams depend on it.
Seven billion dreams. One planet.
