Nature Canada Appears Before Finance Committee to Defend Impact Assessment Act

Changes go far beyond what the Supreme Court of Canada called for.

Unceded Algonquin Territory — Ottawa, ON | June 3, 2024

Nature Canada’s Stephen Hazell was invited before the House of Commons Finance Committee this morning arguing that the government’s proposed changes to Impact Assessment Act in the Omnibus budget bill would severely undercut federal ability to assess projects harmful to nature that are clearly within federal constitutional authority.

Hazell is arguing that these changes go far beyond what the Supreme Court of Canada called for in its opinion last year in which it found the act to be largely unconstitutional.

“Given that climate chaos and destruction of nature are the issues of this century, it is time for the federal government to stop running, turn and fight for legislation that supports climate stability and nature conservation.”
— Stephen Hazell, Environmental Law Consultant
