(Unceded Algonquin Territory, Ottawa, October 3, 2023) — Nature Canada’s Women for Nature initiative is proud to announce Élise Laferrière of Hudson, Quebec, as one of the recipients of our 2023 Young Nature Leaders Grant. This grant encourages, fosters and nurtures youth to demonstrate their leadership in nature.

Élise is developing a downloadable curriculum about human impacts on birds for elementary school-aged students to educate others about how to save bird lives.

“I’ll be developing a free downloadable for elementary school aged students and aim to use this tool to teach children about the direct impacts of humans on wild birds by using real life cases of birds admitted to Le Nichoir Wild Bird Conservation Centre. Students will also learn about the natural history and the causes of decline of three declining species of birds found in Quebec and will have to come up with ways they can help Save Bird Lives,” says Élise Laferrière.

Élise is a Women for Nature Young Nature Leader alongside:

• Brianna Barrett of St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador;
• Jessica Lewis of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia;
• Kassidy Matheson of Murray Harbour, Prince Edward Island; and
• Derek Nguyen of Ajax, Ontario

“It brings me great hope and happiness to see these young people taking leadership in their local communities to help and heal nature,” says the Honourable Rosa Galvez, Honorary Chair of Nature Canada’s Women for Nature program. “Through their actions and advocacy, young Canadians across the country are creating a cleaner and brighter tomorrow,” declares Galvez.

The Young Nature Leaders Grant began in 2017 to empower youth to develop and implement a youth-led, community-based project centered around nature and sustainability in Canada. This year’s recipients join an impressive list of previous recipients with unique and complementary ideas.
