Unceded Algonquin Territory – Ottawa, ON (September 16, 2024)
Nature Canada is thrilled to announce that Alana Krug-MacLeod has been awarded the prestigious Charles Labatiuk Nature Scholarship for 2024. This award honors her outstanding dedication to environmental conservation, sustainability, and nature advocacy. Alana’s lifelong commitment to protecting the planet embodies the values and legacy of Charles Labatiuk, a tireless champion for nature conservation.
Growing up in a family where environmental responsibility was not just an option but a way of life, Alana’s passion for conservation started early. From biking to school and wearing second-hand clothes to immersing herself in nature, her upbringing instilled a profound respect for the interconnectedness of life on Earth. In her recent blog, titled “Nature Conservation: Self-Preservation, Belonging, and Caring,” she reflects on how these formative experiences shaped her understanding of the natural world and ignited her journey as a conservationist.
“I am incredibly honored to receive the Charles Labatiuk Nature Scholarship,” says Ms. Krug-MacLeod. “This award will help support my continued studies and research into conservation, especially as I work on marine spatial planning and policies in the Arctic. I am deeply grateful to the Labatiuk family and Nature Canada for this opportunity and for believing in the importance of this work.”
Nature Canada is proud to support Alana as she embarks on the next chapter of her conservation journey, continuing the legacy of Charles Labatiuk and inspiring future generations of environmental stewards.
