The plovers are back!
Ontario Piping Plover Guardians Kim and Brendan Toews have just sent in their first report of the new season. Here you go:
Just thought I’d let Nature Canada know that for the 6th consecutive year the Piping Plovers have returned once again to Sauble Beach, Ontario!

On 23 April, the first banded male Piping Plover arrived at the north end of the beach.  As of 12 May, at least one pair has begun nesting at the north end of the public beach area.  Eggs are expected soon and tiny, young plovers by early July, the volunteer plover guardian program is being reinstated for another season.

We also have another pair and some individual plovers at Sauble this spring.
The first training session for volunteer piping plover monitors is scheduled for tonight, with volunteers needed at Sauble for the May long weekend.

Craig Todd, stewardship coordinator with the Ministry of Natural Resources said that he will take as many people as he can find for the session and will offer subsequent training, but he asks that people register ahead of time so he knows how many to expect. About 20 had signed up by Friday.  Register by calling 519-371-8465 or e-mailing craig.todd [at] ontario.ca.

You can read plover reports from previous years here, and here. Thanks Kim and Brendan!
