Nurturing the Rights of Nature
For me, it’s not marked by a single moment—it’s more like a river, quietly flowing and growing stronger over time. Nature has always been a presence in my life, even before I truly understood its importance. In Canada, the idea of “rights for nature” has felt—until recently—like scattered seeds, each one waiting to take root. But with leadership by Nature Canada and others, these seeds are sprouting into a community of advocates and changemakers. Nature Canada brings people together, fostering collaboration and a shared purpose. One thing is clear: love for nature is something that transcends politics and unites us all. Nature is, in many ways, a common table— there’s a place at it for everyone. Much of our work is about asking a simple, powerful question: when decisions are being made, where does nature sit at the table? In our legal system, rights ensure that voices are heard—how can we ensure nature’s voice is included?
In Indigenous teachings, there is the principle of “doing things in a good way”—with respect, integrity, and reciprocity towards all beings and the land itself. This wisdom guides and inspires me in my support for Nature Canada. My contributions to Nature Canada through the Rights of Nature (Canada) Fund are intended to spark even broader support. I invite you, as fellow nature lovers, to consider what nature means in your life, and how you can help give nature a stronger voice. Together, our time, energy, and gifts can help protect and uplift the natural world we all belong to and cherish.
Let’s do this work—together—in a good way.
