We are intensely concerned by the clearly unsustainable exploitation of Canada’s forests and fisheries that has been going on for decades. We worry greatly about the consequences for Nature, from the exploitation of fossil fuels and minerals. This unrestrained consumption has inevitably led to climate changes and all the consequences for water resources and the habitats that support humanity and all living things. Not all consequences are foreseeable and accidents do happen! The precautionary principle needs to be applied much more strongly.

We feel such ongoing exploitation is ridiculously short-sighted and is against 50 years of science-based advice. Our governments need to be much more conservation minded. Compromising our environment in the name of short-term economics makes no sense. If our environment becomes unlivable then the economy doesn’t matter.

We are thankful to organizations like Nature Canada and the many other similar ones that we have supported financially ever since we immigrated to Canada 60 years ago. We can play a part in joining all our fellow members who feel the same way that we do.

Too often it seems that our governments respond only to the exploiters, when they really should heed the conservationists. Our voices need to be stronger and we’re thankful that Nature Canada does so much to educate the public and politicians about the value to our future, of all our fellow living organisms and their habitats.

Giving to Nature Canada feels good. Making the decision to leave a gift in our wills was a natural step. As lifetime educators in biology, the enthusiasm and energy of young people is so encouraging. Conservation education is essential. One of our mottos is “To know Nature and keep it worth knowing“. That is at the heart of why we give today and will give forever. If people ‘out there’ are considering making a gift to protect our natural environment, by whatever means, JUST DO IT. Give what you can now, continue for as long as you can, and speak out about your concerns. That is what we are doing.
