The winter months are hard on everyone—the long nights, being forced to turn the heating up and stay inside more often can take its toll on humans. However, these cold temperatures can be even more challenging for the wildlife around us. Birds have a harder time finding access to food, as their natural seed sources are depleted this time of the year. 

Since February is Feed The Birds Month it is important to remember that many birds’ survival depends on having access to some extra calories. This easy DIY tutorial will help you create a bird feeding station you can place in your backyard—your local wildlife will thank you for it! 

What you’ll need:

• Pliers 
• Wire Cutters
• Drill or Bodkin Needle
• Welded Wire Mesh 
• Cable Ties
• Plant Pot Saucers
• Threaded Rod
• Washers and Nuts

How to create this DIY Wire Mesh Bird Feeder

First, you will need to prepare your supplies and cut the mesh to size. This project was created using a 30x40cm long piece of mesh, but you can size up or down depending on the desired outcome. 

Next, you will need to create a tube out of the mesh you cut. Secure it with cable ties, while making sure that it has the same diameter throughout. Then take the bottom (smaller) saucer and drill holes in it as seen in step 4 below. Make a bigger hole in the middle of the saucer, which should be the size of the threaded rod. 

Cut some small pieces of wire and use the little holes to secure the wire mesh to the saucers with them. Place the threaded rod through the middle hole and secure it with a washer and a nut. 

Make a hole in the middle of the top (larger) saucer, similarly to the bottom one. Before you secure it to the rest of the feeder, fill the feeder with bird food. 

Once the food is placed inside the wire mesh tube, close it off by securing the top washer with a washer and a hoop nut. Use small sticks in order to create perches for the birds to sit on. 

Once you have placed the perches, your bird feeder is ready to be hung outside. Your local wildlife will thank you for it!
