The mission of the Green Budget Coalition is to present an analysis of the most pressing issues regarding environmental sustainability in Canada and to make a consolidated annual set of recommendations to the federal government regarding strategic fiscal and budgetary opportunities.

Recommendations for Recovery and Budget Actions in 2026-2027

At this pivotal time in Canadian history, amidst economic and geopolitical uncertainty, it is critical to renew and strengthen federal funding and fiscal policies to address the climate, nature and pollution crises, and to integrate these environmental priorities into Canada’s economic strategies.

Investments in climate and nature action, reducing pollution, and strong industrial carbon pricing are crucial for advancing the Prime Minister’s seven priorities, particularly for a strong Canadian economy, lowering costs for Canadians, more affordable housing, and attracting the best talent. The Prime Minister himself has emphasized that action on climate change is both an economic imperative and a moral duty.

Such investments could ensure Canada flourishes in the years ahead with dependable clean energy, energy efficient housing, climate resilience, treasured nature areas, preserved biodiversity, healthy people, reliable chemicals management, heavy industry that can compete in green export markets, and a more globally-competitive cleantech sector.

For Budget 2026, the Green Budget Coalition is featuring four recommendations:

1. Modern, Resilient East-West Electricity Grid Based on Renewables ($32 billion over five years)
2. Climate-Resilient Housing ($8.75 billion over five years)
3. Strengthened Industrial Carbon Pricing (effective carbon price)
4. Combatting Plastic Pollution ($300 million over five years)

Implementing these Green Budget Coalition recommendations would lead to transformative progress in advancing enduring environmental, economic, and social prosperity for all peoples in Canada from coast to coast to coast.
