Protect Wildlife Habitat

Our wild places are worth defending. This is the year to do it.

Canada made a promise to protect at least 17% of land and inland water and 10% of coastal and marine areas by 2020. Momentum is growing across the country to protect wild places and the plants and animals within them. Learn more about key areas and take action with Nature Canada.

About the Campaign

Forests, grasslands, oceans and wetlands are being destroyed and degraded as never before by poorly considered industrial, agricultural and residential development.

Only ten percent of Canada’s land and inland water and less than one percent of our ocean is legally protected. As a result, 50% of Canada’s wildlife species are in decline.

Federal and provincial governments are committed internationally to protect 17% of Canada’s land and inland water and 10% of Canada’s ocean by 2020.
