Democracy in Action: Nature on the Hill
In the heart of the Nation’s capital, Nature on the Hill brings democracy to life with nature at its center. Organized by Nature Canada, the event unites voices from across the country to call on the federal government to protect what makes Canada extraordinary: our natural world.
A United Voice for Nature
Over the course of the week, delegates from nature groups large and small will meet with MPs, Senators, and Ministers; both on Parliament Hill and in their home ridings. Our message is clear: nature needs urgent action, and Canadians are ready to lead the way.
The energy is electric. Birders, watershed alliances, faith-based groups, Indigenous leaders, youth advocates, and more all bring their own stories and struggles, woven together into one powerful chorus: Protect Nature!
“Canadians from all stripes and all places across Canada really care about protecting nature, and so when we can find ways to work together we can get better conservation outcomes. It’s having a coordinated approach to make sure that biodiversity is protected across all levels of government” – Michael McDonald, CEO of Bruce Trail Conservancy.
“Events like these really remind me of how many people truly care. These are our livelihoods, our careers, our passion. And seeing so many people in a room meeting with members of parliament advocating for this important work does make me hopeful.” – Kristen Walters, Biologist and Director, Salmon Habitat, Climate, and Policy, Raincoast Conservation Foundation.
This year, we are telling the government to:
- Fund the 2030 Nature Strategy and end nature-harming subsidies
- Protect nature by establishing new protected areas and funding Indigenous-led conservation programs
- Invest in nature restoration, including restoring habitats for culturally significant and at-risk species.
