The Blue-winged Teal is a migratory dabbling duck. This species is not a fan of Canada’s cold weather as they are one of the first ducks to head south for the winter and one of the last ducks to return back north for the spring. Even though these ducks are gone for a large portion of the year, you are likely to always see a Blue-winged Teal as it is the second most abundant duck species in North America!

Each week we introduce a new bird from the Ottawa-Gatineau area through our segment on CBC Radio’s In Town and Out. Alex MacDonald, Nature Canada’s Manager of Protected Areas, shares interesting facts about the birds that live in our communities. Be sure to tune-in to “Bird Tweet of the Week” on CBC Radio One 91.5 FM on Saturday mornings from 6am to 9am and listen to past episodes on our website.

This episode aired on Saturday, March 19th, 2016.
