Once considered “extinct in the wild”, the Swift Fox now calls the grasslands home.

In 1978, Swift Fox were thought to be gone forever. Today, there are over 650 found in the mixed grass prairie near the Saskatchewan-Alberta border, within and around Grasslands National Park. About the size of a housecat, they can keep pace with a Jackrabbit at more than 60 km/hour.

Govenlock supports an expanding population of successfully reintroduced Swift Fox. Nature Canada—with the support of our members—is working to have Govenlock established as a National Wildlife Area to ensure stronger protections for Swift Fox and other grassland species at risk.
