It is also known as \u201cWhiskey Jack\u201d\u2014an English variation on its Algonquin name \u201cWisakajack,\u201d which refers to a forest trickster spirit found in Algonquian mythology. In French, it continues to go by the name \u201c<em>M\u00e9sangeai du Canada.\u201d\u00a0<\/em>We love the name M\u00e9sangeai because it combines the concept of two families of birds into one \u2013 the Jays (les Geais) and the Chickadees (les M\u00e9sanges) into one bird.\u00a0 And the M\u00e9sangeai does not disappoint as it looks like a giant Chickadee, and it seems to capture the curious or trusting nature, storing habits, survival skills and cuteness factor of both families.<\/p>\n<p>In 2016,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/nationalbird.canadiangeographic.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em><u>Canadian Geographic\u2019<\/u><\/em><u>s \u201cNational Bird Project\u201d<\/u><\/strong><\/a>\u00a0picked the Gray Jay as its official choice for Canada\u2019s national bird. The aim of the project is to recommend a bird to the government in the hopes of having a national bird declared for Canada\u2019s 150<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0anniversary.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Common name:<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.allaboutbirds.org\/guide\/Gray_Jay\/id\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><u>Gray Jay<\/u><\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Scientific name<\/strong>:\u00a0<em>Perisoreus Canadensis<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Other names:<\/strong>\u00a0Whiskey Jack,\u00a0<em>M\u00e9sangeai du Canada<\/em>\u00a0(French)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Range:<\/strong>\u00a0Throughout Canada; year-round<\/li>\n<li><strong>Description:<\/strong>\u00a0Gray Jays are relatively large songbirds with a short bill, a rounded head and a long tail. They are dark grey above and light grey below, and the back of their head is black.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Canada Warbler<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The Canada Warbler, formerly \u201cCanadian Warbler\u201d in\u00a0<em>The American Ornithologists\u2019 Uni<\/em>on 1<sup>st<\/sup>\u00a0and 2<sup>nd<\/sup>\u00a0editions, is a small songbird that arrives in Canada in late May for its breeding season. In fact, eighty-five percent of the global breeding population occurs in Canada.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, the Canada Warbler\u2019s status under\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sararegistry.gc.ca\/species\/speciesDetails_e.cfm?sid=1008\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><u>the Species at Risk Act (SARA)<\/u><\/strong><\/a>\u00a0is \u201cThreatened\u201d and it is also designated as \u201cThreatened\u201d according to the 2008 assessment by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC). Between 1997 and 2007, the Canada Warbler saw a 43% decline. The most likely factors in this decline are believed to be habitat loss and degradation in its wintering region.\u00a0If you are portaging along a river on the Canadian shield or int the boreal forest in June, you may hear the complex song of this golden bird burst forth from the tumbled over tree roots and mossy boulders.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Common name:<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/avibase.bsc-eoc.org\/species.jsp?avibaseid=F2D675AFB11EEEFF&amp;sec=taxontable&amp;chklists=AOU_1&amp;chklists=AOU_2&amp;chklists=AOU_3&amp;chklists=AOU_4&amp;chklists=AOU_5&amp;chklists=AOU_6&amp;chklists=AOU_7&amp;chklists=AVIBASE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><u>Canada Warbler<\/u><\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Scientific name<\/strong>:\u00a0<em>Cardellina canadensis<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Range:<\/strong>\u00a0YT, NWT, BC, AB, SK, MB, ON, QC, NB, PEI, NS; in the summer<\/li>\n<li><strong>Description:<\/strong>\u00a0The Canada Warbler is a small, brightly coloured songbird. Males are typically more vibrant than females, blue-grey above with a yellow underbody. There are 11 subspecies of Canada Goose, though the four smallest are now known distinctly as Cackling Goose.<\/p>\n<p>Along with the Canada Jay, the Canada Goose made it to the top five birds in the running for\u00a0<em>Canadian Geographic<\/em>\u2019s \u201cNational Bird Project.\u201d Canada Geese are a staple in the food supply of the Cree living around James Bay.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Common name:<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.allaboutbirds.org\/guide\/Canada_Goose\/id\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><u>Canada Goose<\/u><\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Scientific name<\/strong>:\u00a0<em>Branta Canadensis<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Range:<\/strong>\u00a0Throughout Canada; in the summer<\/li>\n<li><strong>Description<\/strong>: The Canada Goose is a large waterbird with a signature black neck and a white chinstrap. Its back is brown and its underside is tan.
