Dear Minister Guilbeault,

I am writing to you today to express how important the Fraser Estuary is to me. The Roberts Bank Terminal 2 project puts this globally significant bird haven and critical habitat for Southern Resident Killer Whales in the crosshairs of ecological destruction. The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency has been very clear that should the project go ahead, the impacts to ecosystems would be “regional in extent, permanent in duration, irreversible, and continuous.” These impacts are unacceptable. I am happy that the federal government has committed to halting and reversing nature loss by 2030, but if projects like Robert’s Bank go ahead, we move further and further away from that goal. In order for the federal government to keep its nature promises, it’s imperative that you reject the proposed expansion and stand up for species like Chinook Salmon, Western Sandpipers, Southern Resident Killer Whales, and countless others who rely on the Estuary.

The Fraser Estuary ecosystem is too sensitive and too important to gamble with. Climate change is here and is already impacting the Estuary. The estuary has lost nearly 80% of its natural habitat and this project would put the precious 20% that remains on the chopping block. Mitigation plans put forward by the proponent simply do not cut it. It’s impossible to ‘offset’ species extinction, and Environment and Climate Change Canada’s own scientists have stated that impacts to Western Sandpipers would be “unmitigable, immediate and irreversible”. Enough is enough. Please do the right thing and reject this project once and for all. I am counting on decision-makers like you to do what it takes to reverse the trend of species collapse. Reject RBT2, and give constituents like me hope that there’s a better future for nature around the corner.
