Bird Day

World Migratory Bird Day: Saturday, May 11, 2024

Protect Bugs, Protect Birds!

Every year Nature Canada and our partners work alongside nature organizations across the country to celebrate World Migratory Bird Day each second Saturday in May. This year’s celebrations are occurring on May 11, 2024, but you can celebrate all month long!

This is the official website of World Migratory Bird Day in Canada — your all-in-one place to discover, defend, and restore Canada’s migratory birds and the places they call home.

Here you will find everything you need to celebrate World Migratory Bird Day (“Bird Day”) this year, from event toolkits to local events and more!

Our love of birds comes with a responsibility to act in their defence. Bird populations are in decline and their habitats are in peril. This year’s World Migratory Bird Day theme addresses the link between insect populations, their decline, and migratory bird populations. As insect populations become increasingly endangered by human action, such as increased pesticide and insecticide use, many migratory birds' main food sources are also put in jeopardy. It is up to all of us to ensure we are doing all we can to mitigate threats to our wild bird populations as well as protect and conserve the insect populations that are so essential in keeping birds, bugs and our planet safe and healthy throughout their annual migrations year-round. Not to mention, the natural aspects of pest control that birds provide!

This year, we invite you to take action and do your part to conserve our insect populations, reduce insecticide use, and celebrate the arrival of migratory birds back into our neighbourhoods this Bird Day!
