Sandra Sawers

Major Gifts & Grants Officer

New to Nature Canada in 2019, Sandra unites her love for nature and community building in her role as Major Gifts & Grants Officer.

With a BSc Honours in Biology from Queens University, Sandra began her career at the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources working in fish and wildlife management in the greater Kingston-Belleville area.

In Ottawa, she held positions in sales and business management in both the private sector and as an entrepreneur. Sandra returned to academia as a mature student obtaining a Certificate in Business Management from the Sprott School of Business at Carleton University and in 2018, completed a Master’s degree in Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership, also at Carleton University.

As a lifelong volunteer with a passion for people and the environment she spent the last 10 years enjoying meaningful work in the nonprofit sector. At Ecoequitable, a charity and social enterprise dedicated to empowering marginalized women and upcycling textiles, she managed a startup that provided skills-based training and diverted thousands of tonnes of fabric from local landfills each year. Prior to joining Nature Canada, Sandra held two separate roles as Interim Executive Director and Director of Stakeholder Relations at Forum for Young Canadians. Her strengths include building relationships and strong, enduring partnerships with leaders in government, private, nonprofit and charitable sectors.
