National Parks to Begin Reopening in June

Victoria Day long weekend is often considered the unofficial start of summer and the first camping weekend of the season. But while we can’t take off to our favourite campsites this weekend, we finally have a date for when national parks will begin to reopen!

In a news release issued earlier today, Parks Canada announced that starting June 1, select national parks and other sites will gradually begin to reopen to the public. The announcement also notes that national marine conservation areas, national historic sites, national wildlife areas, and historic waterways will also be a part of the reopening.

The move includes access to some trails, greenspaces, and day use areas. Camping facilities will remain closed until at least June 21, however, as Parks Canada continues to evaluate when those services can resume.

As we continue to physically distance and stay home during the COVID-19 pandemic, access to nature has never been more important. Nature is essential to our physical and mental well-being and the gradual reopening of parks will be essential for Canadians across the country looking to get out into nature and reap these benefits.

When national parks closed earlier this year, people noticed. These unprecedented times have made Canadians more aware than ever of the value of nature in our lives—and of the importance of access to it for everyone.

So, while we may not be able to get the camping season started this weekend in the same way that we’ve done in the past, we can look forward to exploring Canada’s parks again in June.

If you’re looking to learn more about the reopening of parks, join us this Wednesday for our live Nature Talks video segment on “Re-Opening Canada’s Parks!” Learn what the reopening means for nature-lovers across the country, walk through the latest parks-related news, and discuss the important role national parks, migratory bird sanctuaries, and national wildlife areas play in Canada’s recovery.
