Nature Canada Thanks Mara Kerry for 11 Years of Service

October 12, 2011 (Ottawa) — Nature Canada, a leading voice for nature conservation in Canada, today thanked Mara Kerry for her determined efforts advancing nature conservation during 11 years at Nature Canada, lasting from 2000 until earlier this month.

“Mara is a strong advocate for nature who worked tirelessly to advance the cause of conservation in Canada and beyond our borders,” said Ian Davidson, Nature Canada’s executive director. “She successfully applied her passion and skills to build support for conservation initiatives from Canada to the Caribbean. Her contributions to the nature conservation community have been great.”

Before coming to Nature Canada, Mara worked for the Commission for Environmental Cooperation where she was involved in the sound management of chemicals. In 2000, she joined Nature Canada and immediately began to apply her experiences overseas to the organization’s nascent work beyond its borders.

During her time at Nature Canada, Mara strengthened partnerships within Canada’s naturalist community, and was instrumental in helping to advance the Important Bird Areas Program, a site-based initiative that engages local stakeholders in the scientific monitoring and stewardship of globally important sites for biodiversity across Canada. Mara also helped build a migratory bird conservation program that integrated conservation and sustainable development goals between this country and partners in Central and South America, with whom we share common migratory species.

Nature Canada’s Executive Director, Ian Davidson, will assume Mara’s responsibilities to ensure the organization continues to build on Mara’s achievements.
