The “Prairie Passages” tour is hosted by Nature Canada and Public Pastures – Public Interest and aims to raise awareness about the need for better management to conserve grassland habitat, especially in the wake of changes in the management of the PFRAs.

Accompanied by international conservation advocates, including Alberto Yanosky, Executive Director of the BirdLife partner in Paraguay, Guyra Paraguay, Atwood and Gibson will visit Saskatchewan’s grasslands and share their thoughts on the plight of some of the rarest habit on earth.

“The ecological value of these large tracts of unbroken prairie is internationally recognized,” Ms. Atwood said. “We have heard that 16 at-risk bird species on Saskatchewan’s most critical grasslands may be losing their legislative protection and conservation management. That concerns us, as it should concern all Canadians.”

The Prairie Passages Tour kicked off with a warm reception hosted by First Nations University of Canada and Public Pastures-Public Interest (PPPI) in Regina, Saskatchewan on June 24.

“First Nations University is honoured to open its doors to celebrated authors Margaret Atwood and Graeme Gibson, who are fostering open discussion of environmental issues through the Prairie Passages Tour,” said Dr. Lynn Wells, Vice President Academic. “We welcome their acknowledgement of the traditional First Nations territory that they are visiting by opening dialogue in a respectful way at our Indigenous post-secondary institute of higher learning.”

At a dinner and media conference held on June 27 and 28, Atwood and Gibson will be sharing their observations of what they’ve seen during their tour of the Saskatchewan grasslands.

“This is a chance to help celebrate Saskatchewan’s grasslands as a destination, so we will be using social and conventional media to highlight the beauty of Canada’s publicly owned and managed grasslands,” said Atwood.
