Canadians Don’t Want Environmental Laws Gutted: Nature Canada Poll

On Tuesday, Members of Parliament passed the government’s omnibus budget implementation bill, moving it one step closer to becoming law. But the bill, which threatens to dismantle Canada’s environmental laws, does not have the support of thousands of individual Canadians and hundreds of organizations. Opposition to Bill C-38 was readily apparent in the recent Black Out Speak Out campaign, which drew nearly 10,000 supporters on Facebook and included the participation of 600 organizations. In our May 2012 Quick Poll of the Month, we asked people if they agreed with Ottawa’s overhaul of the environmental process. The numbers were quite telling – 96% of respondents said ‘no’.Why did people disagree with the overhaul? Here’s a sampling of some of the answers we received:“I believe in transitioning to a clean energy future and the gutting of environmental reviews will not move us in that direction.”

“They are gutting the environmental process so that resource companies, especially oil companies, can take away our resources and destroy or waters, air, and land with impunity.”

“An over haul like this deserves proper consultation and due process. Somethings need changing, some proposed changes are throwing us back to the 60’s.”

It’s not too late to add your voice to the growing number of people opposing Bill C38. Take the poll and share your views on Facebook and Twitter (use #blackoutspeakout).
