Nature Canada applauds the Government of Canada’s action to remove its objections and fully implement the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples!

Nature Canada is delighted that Indigenous Affairs Minister Carolyn Bennett has announced to the United Nations General Assembly that Canada has removed its objections and will fully implement the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. So many issues are linked to indigenous rights, as Minister Bennett noted, including social justice issues, economic issues, but also nature issues. Nature Canada has every reason to believe that by recognizing the rights and responsibilities of indigenous peoples, including increased control over natural resources within their traditional territories, nature can only benefit.

Nature Canada is honoured and privileged to work in partnership with Cree communities on James Bay to protect habitats and species at risk. We salute the Minister and the current federal government for following through with this key election promise. For our part, Nature Canada promises to support indigenous peoples regain their rights, dignity and control over their lives and resources through our partnerships for nature conservation. Sunny ways indeed!
