Winners Announced for Nature Canada’s “Welcome Back the Birds 2013” Contest
This spring Nature Canada joined naturalist groups across Canada in welcoming back our birds as part of International Migratory Bird Day. We developed resources such as our “conservation tips” bookmarks, our Junior Birder Journal and Activity Book and our official 2013 Welcome Back Birds poster which we shared with naturalist groups to help them engage Canadians at their International Migratory Bird Day event.
The events took a variety of forms, from simple guided nature walks to week-long festivals. We invited these groups to tell us the story of their event in a visual way for a chance to win $500 to support their conservation efforts. We received two outstanding submissions and couldn’t choose just one winner.
We would like to announce the two winners of the “Welcome Back the Birds 2013 Contest”:
The Nova Scotia Nature Trust hosted a guided walk and bird count to celebrate International Migratory Bird Day 2013. The walk took place on the Meander River Conservation Lands, where participants enjoyed learning about migratory birds and their habitat.
The Rocky Point Bird Observatory held its 4th Annual International Migratory Bird Celebration at Elk/ Beaver Lake Regional Park. The program for the day included birding walks, touch tables, crafts, scavenger hunts, games, songbird and hummingbird banding demonstrations, a purple martin display, live raptors, and fun for the whole family!
Even though it seems summer has just started we are already thinking about planning a farewell to the birds in the fall as they leave us for warmer places. And of course we are looking forward to next spring and making International Migratory Bird Day celebration in Canada even bigger and better!
