Example of Tax Savings

Donations from individuals are eligible for a federal tax credit equal to 15% on the first $200 of the donation, and 29% on the remainder.*

Here is an example of how a donation of $1,000 will cost you less than $740 because of the tax credit you can apply against your federal taxes.

Amount of donation receipt $1,000
Federal tax credit
15% of the first $200 $30
29% of the remaining $800 $232
Total federal tax credit $262

Your cost to make a $1,000 donation to Nature Canada:
$1,000 - $262 = $738

Provincial tax credits for charitable donations will add even more to your tax savings! These vary depending on your province of residence. For example, for the 2005 taxation year, donors living in Ontario could claim a provincial tax credit of 6.05% on donations up to $200, and 11.16% of the gift in excess of $200.

(*Please note there is an upper maximum that can be claimed based on your net income.)
