A male ruby-throated hummingbird has a striking red throat, but the female does not.

It lives in woodland areas, but also visits gardens and yards where flowering plants grow. They feed on flowers, nectar and sap, pollinating many plants in the process.
With a high metabolism and a dizzyingly fast wing beat, the ruby-throated hummingbird can sometimes eat twice its body weight in food each day to get the energy it needs.

This hummingbird breeds in North America and winters in Mexico and Central America. The migration to its wintering grounds takes it across the Gulf of Mexico, a perilous journey that requires a feeding frenzy to ensure survival.
