Great Basin Spadefoot (Spea intermontanus)

Great basin spadefoot

  • 3.7 to 6.4 cm
  • Found only in B.C.
  • Call is a frequently repeated, nasal-sounding "Waah"
  • Calling begins in late spring or early summer after heavy rains
  • Spadefoots have a vertical pupil, no parotoid gland and a "spade" on each hind foot
  • Brown to dull green, with a glandular ridge between the eyes
  • Breeds in temporary ponds formed after rains
