Nature Canada welcomes the June 8, 2017 announcement of a National Advisory Panel to provide recommendations to governments on how Canada can meet our international commitment to protect at least 17% of our lands by 2020.

Establishment of the National Advisory Panel is another important step towards achieving the 17% target. Canada currently protects 10.3% of our lands.

This panel of distinguished conservation experts will help governments achieve the 2020 targets and plan for conservation efforts beyond 2020.

Members of the Panel include:

  • Reg Crowshoe, Piikani Blackfoot Elder and former Chief of the Piikani Nation
  • Chloe Dragon-Smith, Nature Canada’s first Young Woman for Nature
  • Alison Woodley, CPAWS National Director of Parks Program
  • Nik Lopoukhine, former Chair of the IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas.

Nature Canada strongly supports the emphasis on Indigenous perspectives in the process to achieve the 17% target, including through an Indigenous Circle of Experts
