Nature Canada

Get Involved and Celebrate With Us!

This year, Nature Canada turns 85 and we want to celebrate together!

Did you know that birthday fundraisers are one of the best ways to support Nature Canada in protecting and conserving wildlife? It’s true! Your birthday is a time to celebrate YOU and the things that are important to you. And sharing the message of wilderness conservation with your community can be really powerful.

This year, in celebration of Nature Canada’s 85th birthday, we are asking wilderness lovers like you to raise funds for nature by making their own Facebook Birthday Fundraiser. It’s easy to set up and can be shared with family and friends as a way to celebrate you while also preventing habitat loss and protecting species at risk of extinction.

By launching your Birthday Fundraiser you will be:

  • Mobilizing Canadians like yourself to insist our leaders take action for the hundreds of at-risk species not yet protected by law;
  • Establishing more Protected Areas to preserve Canada’s wild habitats;
  • Strengthening laws that protect nature and reduce the effects of climate change on our planet; and
  • Protecting at-risk species by preserving their key habitats all across Canada.

You can make a difference! Your impact will save species from extinction and make sure Canada’s beautifully diverse ecosystems can be enjoyed for generations to come. Help us make the next 85 years, ones for climate action and conservation.

But how do I set up my Facebook Birthday Fundraiser?

Setting up a fundraiser through Facebook is easy. Facebook will usually prompt you close to your birthday, but we encourage you to set up your fundraiser at least one month in advance to give your fundraiser the best chance to meet your goal. You can set one up by clicking below:

Want to make sure your fundraiser is a big success?

Here are some tips on creating a successful fundraiser so that even more wild spaces can be protected!

Giving yourself more time is always better. We recommend setting up your fundraiser to begin at least one month before your birthday and end the day after your birthday. If you notice that you’ve built up some momentum, you can push the end date of your campaign back, so long as it is before the campaign finishes.

Your campaign goal should be reachable but not too low. We recommend starting with $500 and then you can increase the goal to $1000 when you notice you’re close to reaching it.*

* You can make changes to your campaign until it finishes. After that, the campaign is complete and can no longer be changed.

If you have Instagram, make sure to select the option to create your campaign there as well. This way, your community will have two options to choose from and a second opportunity to make their gift.

Invite everyone you know. We mean EVERYONE. Everything you do for the length of your campaign will be impacted by this. This might be the most time-consuming part but well worth it. Don’t be afraid to let someone you haven’t spoken to in a while know you are raising money, they could be your next donor.

Once your campaign launches, making a donation to your fundraiser will set it off on the right foot and set the tone for the campaign. Your gift should be the first gift and the amount should be in range of the donation amounts you hope to receive. People are more likely to give to a campaign if they see others doing the same.

Your fundraiser is set up like a group page, post updates, add photos, thank people and respond to comments. Keeping others engaged is so important. It could mean the difference in whether or not you reach your fundraising goal. Post daily to the campaign page, people forget that they wanted to donate, that post could be what jogged their memory to make the gift. Respond to comments from other people. Engage as much as you can. Thank everyone who makes a gift for doing so. Every donation is so important and a thank you will mean a lot to someone who supported your fundraiser.

Ask your friends if they would be ok with you tagging and challenging them to make a gift. Encourage others to share your campaign to bring it even further. Be the champion of your campaign and get people excited about making a gift to protect and restore Nature in Canada!
